AI Mention Rate, Share of AI Voice, Citation Rate: The Metrics of AI Visibility
You can't improve what you don't measure. Four metrics show how often AI systems mention your company, how you compare with competitors and whether your website serves as a source.
The basis: relevant prompts instead of random questions
All metrics are based on a fixed set of questions (prompts) that your target audience actually asks, for example “Which agency in Zurich helps with SEO?”. These prompts are regularly submitted to several AI systems and the answers are analyzed. Only this way do changes become comparable over time.
| Metric | Question | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| AI Mention Rate | Are we mentioned? | Answers with your brand ÷ all answers |
| Share of AI Voice | How strong are we by comparison? | Your mentions ÷ mentions of all compared brands |
| Citation Rate | Does our website serve as a source? | Answers with a link to your website ÷ all answers |
| Recommendation Rate | Are we actively recommended? | Answers with a clear recommendation ÷ all answers |
How to read the metrics
- High Mention Rate, low Citation Rate: AI systems know your brand but use other sources. Citable content and clear landing pages help here.
- Low Share of AI Voice: Competitors dominate the answers. Analyze which sources are cited for them.
- Large differences between LLMs: Each system uses different sources. The per-LLM analysis shows where you should focus.
How often should you measure?
AI answers fluctuate from day to day. That's why trends over several weeks and comparisons with the previous period are meaningful, not individual measurements.
